Work day!

Today was a work day for the Math 5ers.  We started off with a Numbers, Please! and then the kiddos worked through about 10 medium-level adding/subtracting word problems.

Many finished, everyone got checked--those who still have a few problems to fix will need to do so over the weekend.

More Word Problems!

Today we did a multiplication warmup followed by a processing session on all the word problems we've done this week.  We went back and talked through all of them -- and talked about different ways of solving them.

No homework tonight, but expect a word problem or two over the weekend!

Finishing Group Word Problems

Starting off our day we did a fraction and decimal warm-up -- in honor of the new stickers we got!  (And they're big!)

Then the kids had a chance to finish working together as a group on finishing up their word problems and then moved to working individually again on three word problems--which they'll need to finish for homework.

Onward!

The Word Problems Unit

Welcome to the Word Problems unit!

We've progressed through over half of our Math 5 curriculum this year and I thought it necessary to pause and work solely on word problems for awhile.  For many kids (and parents!!), word problems can wreak havoc on the mind and spirit!  This is why we have the WP unit.

We have been steadily experiencing a variety of word problems, from very easy to quite challenging.  We have also been trying out different strategies for solving our word problems.  Today, for example, we worked in groups--giving ourselves the opportunity to compare our understanding with each other.

This unit will last for probably another week and then we'll switch gears back to fractions and decimals.  I want to go back and tie the two units together--converting fractions to decimals and back being the main objective.  Maybe even some percent thrown in there.

And then we will be on to our final unit--GEOMETRY!  This will be loads of fun and I know the kiddos are already looking forward to it.

Happy word probleming!!!

Internet down

Internet down at CFS so doing this on my phone.

Worked in groups today on word problems--no homework because we'll
work on them together in class tomorrow.

More soon.

Sir Isaac Newton

Today we read about Sir Isaac Newton!

I also began by taking up the word problem homework from over the break--I sent emails out to parents of kids who didn't complete it.

Whew!

Hey all!

It's been so long since I've actually sat down to write for the blog! Writing reports just takes so much time. I'll be making another posting about the "Skills Assessment" you'll find on your child's evaluation soon.

We've been busy wrapping up our unit with Decimals.  They took their tests last week and the last kids got their tests back today.  We're going to spend the next couple of weeks working through some word problems--all different kinds!  And then we'll be off to our final unit on Geometry.

Today we talked about Blaise Pascal.  Ask your kids about the wheelbarrow and the cycloid!

Be on the lookout for another post in the next couple days. Enjoy the break!

Busy Writing Reports!

I apologize that I haven't made any posts recently.  I'll work on that this evening once report writing is done.

Tonight's homework is to finish test corrections (if they need to).

Test Today!

Today the kiddos worked on their Decimals test!  Kids who weren't here yesterday have worked out a new plan for them with me.

Review Day!

Because my room had been taken over for the OC Carnival ran by my Jacobs class, we had Math 5 in the center of the MS today.  And today was review day!

As we always do right before a big test, the kids got the chance to pick the skills that they wanted to review today during class.  All problems that they completed correctly will result in stickers for them.  They may do these problems today during class or at night tonight to count.

Test day is tomorrow!

A note for parents of kids who were absent today: Tomorrow will be your child's review day and they will take their tests on Thursday.  Email me if you have questions.

Galileo!

Today we read a story about Galileo Galilei -- ask your kids about the pendulum and about the leaning Tower of Pisa.

No homework!

But heads up -- DECIMALS TEST ON WEDNESDAY!!!

Long Warm-up

Took a long time to complete our warm-up today!  (3/4 + 6/9 -- then turn it into a mixed number and then reduce)

Then we got back our homework and used most of our time to complete corrections on some of our answers.  Those who did not finish will need to finish for homework (this is HW from two nights ago--on the Ski Trip).

Heads-up--I won't be at school tomorrow and they will be playing a review game.  The Decimals Test is NEXT WEEK!  (Actually, next Wednesday, Feb 13!)

Subtracting!

We spent the majority of today practicing subtracting decimals -- together.

No homework!

Workday!

Today was a workday in Math 5!

The kiddos worked on adding decimals (just normal-like) and then began a sheet that had them using decimals to add and subtract the costs of a ski trip.  They will need to finish this sheet, "Take to the Slopes," for homework.

(Reminders--make sure they line everything up correctly and take their time!  Many questions' answers rely on the answers for other questions!)

John Napier

Today we learned about a Scottish mathematician, John Napier.  Ask your kiddos about him -- there is something really special about him in relation to our current unit!
